Commonwealth Summit (CHOGM) Four years after joining, Togo confirms its commitment

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) concluded on Wednesday in St John’s, Antigua and Barbuda. Over four days, the leaders of the 56 member countries debated climate, trade, innovation and sustainable development. Togo was represented by its Minister of Foreign Affairs, Robert Dussey.

Held under the theme “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” the summit brought together heads of government and ministers, as well as representatives of the business community, civil society and youth.

The discussions focused on the organization’s shared priorities: resilience to climate change — particularly crucial for small island States such as the host country — the development of trade, innovation and equality.

For Togo, taking part in this summit confirms its place in an organization it joined in June 2022, at the same time as Gabon.

A French-speaking country with no historical ties to the British Crown, Togo had justified its accession by its desire to diversify its partnerships and open up to the English-speaking world, particularly in the economic, educational and diplomatic spheres.

The Commonwealth today brings together some 2.7 billion people — around one third of the world’s population — spread across every continent.

The Head of the Commonwealth, King Charles III, attended the summit.
